This week, Attorney General Bill Schuette, filed a motion with the U.S. Court of Appeals regarding the state’s attempt to ban on straight-ticket voting. Originally approved by the legislature and signed by Governor Rick Snyder, the ban on straight-ticket voting was halted by a U.S. District Court Judge last month (see prior article). In his motion to the Appeals Court, the Attorney General requests the court either stay or vacate the District Court’s order. Additionally, he requests an emergency briefing to be scheduled.
“Michigan statute states all election ballots must be finalized sixty days prior to an election. The issue surrounding straight-ticketing voting ideally needs to be resolved prior to that date, in order for the ballots this November to reflect the final decision of the court,” explained Matt Sowash of MLC.
