Affordable Energy Caucus Adopts Principles

Oct 06, 2017

This week, the House Affordable Energy Caucus adopted a set of seven guiding principles and added a new member to the caucus.  The bipartisan caucus was officially formed last month with the goal of lowering energy costs in the state.

The adopted principles are:

  1. Energy policy should serve the collective interest of the energy-consuming, rate-paying public.
  2. Increased competition among a larger pool of energy producers will create a more robust and reliable energy grid.
  3. Increased competition among a larger pool of energy producers tends to drive retail prices downward.
  4. Competition among energy suppliers should not be restricted unless there is a compelling public interest in doing so.
  5. As new energy-generating technology emerges and more entities are able to produce energy in more ways, the energy market becomes increasingly normal and healthy. Energy policy should anticipate this ongoing transition.
  6. Energy policy should not restrict individuals or municipalities from generating or selling their own energy.
  7. The Legislature is the people’s foremost advocate and must diligently defend their interests in all policy-making.

Additionally, Representative Yousef Rabhi (D-Ann Arbor) has joined the committee.
