Absentee Ballot Requests Increases

Jul 08, 2022

This August, Michigan residents will vote on a number of primary candidates including governor, attorney general, secretary of state, and all state house and senate seats. However, as compared to 2018 when the last gubernatorial election was held, a larger number of vote will be cast via absentee ballot. The secretary of state’s office released data comparing 28 days prior to the elections for 2022 and 2018. This year, 876,782 have applied for an absentee ballot, as compared to 507,347 four years ago. However, in terms of ballots returned, this year 61,134 have been returned, whereas at the same point in 2018 77,032 have been returned. This could be caused by several factors, including voters remaining undecided on who they want to back in the primary races. To view the data by jurisdiction, please click here.

Michigan’s primary election will be held on Tuesday, August 2. For your personalized voter information, and to request an absentee ballot, please visit Michigan.gov/vote. To avoid potential mailing delays, the Department of State is suggesting voters request an absentee ballot by July 18.
