Primary Election Overview: 37th Senate District

Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 37^th Michigan Senate District is located in a northwest portion of the Lower Peninsula and a portion of the Upper Peninsula.

Commentary

Four candidates are running in the Republican primary race, including a current and a former state representative. On the Democratic side, three candidates are running including Randy Bishop, a right-wing radio host who has made numerous controversial statements over the past few years. The district has a 56% Republican base.

Democratic Candidates:

- Randy Bishop – Radio show host.
- Barbara Conley – Oncology physician, chair of the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department Board of Health, vice president of the Northport Public School Board.
- Jim Schmidt

Republican Candidates:

- Triston Cole – Former state representative, Senate staffer, professional hunting guide and truck driver.
- Representative John Damoose – State representative, small business owner.
- William Hindle – Owns a home inspection company.
- George Ranville – Village of Mackinaw City Trustee, small business owner.
