State Senator Likely to Resign

Feb 12, 2016

Under the terms of a plea agreement, Senator Virgil Smith (D-Detroit) would resign from his senate seat.  The deal is a result of an incident last May where the Senator allegedly assaulted his ex-wife and fired shots at her car.  While Senator Smith and the prosecutor have come to an agreement on the terms of a plea deal, in court on Thursday Wayne Circuit Judge Lawrence Talon did not make a decision as to if he would agree to the sentencing portion of the deal.  The Judge set a hearing date of March 14.  If the Senator does resign, the Senate Democratic Caucus would only have ten members, the lowest membership level since 1954.
