Primary Election Overview: 16th Michigan Senate District

Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 16^th Michigan Senate District is located in southeast Michigan and includes portions of Hillsdale, Lenawee, and Monroe Counties.

Commentary

The Republican primary race has two current state representatives running for the seat: Representatives Bellino and Clements. While Rep. Bellino is serving his third term in the House, Rep. Clements is serving his first term. This is a race to watch amongst sitting House colleagues. The district has a 58% Republican base; thus, whomever wins the primary race will likely win the general election in November.

Democratic Candidate:

- Katybeth Davis – Human rights activist.

Republican Candidates:

- Representative Joe Bellino – State representative, former small business owner.
- Representative TC Clements – State representative, small business owner, former law enforcement officer.
