Primary Election Overview: 8th Senate District

Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 8^th Michigan Senate District is located in portions of Oakland and Wayne Counties in southeast Michigan. The district has a strong 76% Democratic base; thus, the Democratic primary is the key race in this seat.

Commentary

Due to redistricting, two current state senators are both running in the Democratic primary race. Both Senator Bullock and Senator McMorrow are in their first term in office and neither held public office before. Due to the district makeup, whoever wins the primary, will go on to serve a second term as a Michigan State Senator.

Democratic Candidates:

- Senator Marshall Bullock – State senator, chair of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, district manager for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, juvenile justice advocate
- Senator Mallory McMorrow – State senator, product designer

- Brandon Simpson
