Primary Election Overview: 6th Senate District

May 04, 2022

Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 6th Michigan Senate District is located in southeast Michigan. It includes portions of Oakland and Wayne County and includes part of the City of Detroit. The district has a 68.4% Democratic base, making the Democratic primary the race to watch in this seat.

Commentary

Senator Betty Jean Alexander is running for her second term in office in a very different district than she won 4-years ago. When she won the primary election in 2018, beating a very well-known incumbent senator, she didn’t have any campaign experience and was a surprise upset in the race. She faces experienced candidates in the Democratic primary race this August, but if she is successful is all but assured to win her second term in office this November.

Democratic Candidates:

    • Senator Betty Jean Alexander – State senator, prior to her election she worked for the Wayne County clerk
    • Vicki Barnett – Farmington Hills Mayor, former state representative
    • Darryl Brown
    • Representative Mary Cavanagh – State representative

Republican Candidate:
