MLC Special Update – House Elections Held, Dems Flip Seat

May 04, 2022

Yesterday, special general elections were held in four House seats in Wayne, Macomb, Oakland, and Kent Counties.  Two seats were left open when the former representatives were elected to the Michigan Senate, one after the former representative won a local election, and the fourth was left open following the passing of former Representative Andrea Schroeder.

Three of the election results were as expected due to the district makeup. However, in the 74th House District in Kent County, the Democratic candidate flipped the seat. This seat was held by a Republican and had a strong Republican base, thus the part was expected to hold the seat. The Republican candidate has made several controversial statements, which likely played a role in the results.

Below were the candidates, with the winner italicized.

    • 15th House District, Wayne County
      • Democratic candidate –Jeffrey Pepper
      • Republican candidate – Ginger Shearer
    • 36th House District, Macomb County
      • Democratic candidate – James Diez
      • Republican candidate –Terence Mekoski
    • 43rd House District, Oakland County
      • Democratic candidate – Kent Douglas
      • Republican candidate –Mike Harris
    • 74th House District, Kent County
      • Democratic candidate – Carol Glanville
      • Republican candidate –Robert Regan

Each of the winners will serve the remainder of the current term, ending on December 31, 2022. They will need to run again this year if they want to serve a full two-year term in the House.
