Primary Election Overview: 3rd Congressional District

Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 3^rd Congressional District is located in West Michigan and includes portions of Kent, Muskegon, and Ottawa Counties. The base district is nearly evenly split with 50.1% identifying as Republican and 49.9% as Democratic.

Commentary

Congressman Meijer is running for his second term in office. He has faced opposition within his own party since voting to impeach former President Donald Trump. If he successfully wins the primary race this August, he will have another tough race in the general election. Given the makeup of the district, this race is seen as a toss-up this November.

Republican Candidate:

- John Gibbs – Served as Acting Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development at HUD and director of the Office of Personnel Management during the Trump administration, missionary, software developer.
- Gabi Manolache – Attorney
- Congressman Peter Meijer – Congressman, Army Veteran, worked at a disaster response organization and NGO.
