Local Road Funding Changes Sent to the Governor

Legislation seeking to save local communities from increased road repair costs associated with the use of federal funding received legislative approval this week. According to the Department of Transportation, its estimated local road agencies see a cost increase of 20% – 30% from meeting federal standards associated with utilizing federal funding. While the department only sees an estimated 10% – 15% increase in their cost to comply with federal requirements because they have an operation that is more suited to handle the administrative federal requirements. Under the legislation, local road agencies could elect to participate in a federal aid swap with the state and state funds could be used to replace those federal dollars. The bills were presented to Governor Gretchen Whitmer for her consideration.
