House Republican Caucus Announced Public Safety Plan

Members of the House Republican Caucus introduced legislation, which they hope will support public safety personnel and protect residents. The $250 million supplemental budget plan focuses on recruitment and retention, community outreach and equipment upgrades. The initiative includes $57.5 million for a ‘Move to Michigan’ recruitment plan to help local departments hire officers working in other states. Other aspects of the proposal include:

- Tuition assistance and grants to help offset academy expenses
- $7.5 million for mental health assistance
- $10 million in community policing initiative grants
- $15 million to expand Detroit’s Police Athletic League to other communities
- Support for local police K-9 units

The bill has been referred to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration.
