August Unemployment Rate Declines

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate last month declined by a tenth of a percentage point to 4.7%. During the month, employment grew by 14,000, while unemployment declined by 3,000. This resulted in a monthly workforce advance of 11,000.

During the month, the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area’s seasonally adjusted rate declined by two-tenths of a percentage point to 4.1%. Total employment for the area increased by 8,000, while the number of unemployed dropped by 3,000.

Highlights from the monthly report from the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, include:

    • Total statewide employment advanced for the sixth consecutive month.
    • Employment was 5.1%, which is below the February 2020 pre-pandemic total.
    • The number of unemployed in the state was 39,000, or 21.3% higher than pre-pandemic levels.
    • The August 2021 rate was a full percentage point above the February 2020 pre-pandemic rate.
    • The most over-the-month employment addition occurred in the state’s transportation equipment manufacturing sector.
    • Statewide payroll employment grew by 3.2% over the year.
