Michigan House OKs Election Security Bills

In a move that some have called a solution in search of a problem, the Michigan House approved a series of bills that would require that electronic poll books and vote tabulators be disconnected from the Internet during an election. The bills wouldn’t have an immediate impact as those machines currently aren’t connected to the Internet during elections.

Proponents of the legislation argue that passage of the bills is forward looking and anticipatory. “It is permissible in engineering terms to try to figure out how to fix something before it breaks, to anticipate possible avenues of failure and be concerned about them,” Representative David LaGrand said of the bills.
