The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved a $51.7 million federal grant for Michigan from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to invest in infrastructure. The funds can be used for projects including erosion stabilization, flood control, and stormwater improvement to prepare for future extreme weather events. According to a press release from the governor’s office, for every dollar invested in making infrastructure more climate-resilient, six dollars can be saved.
This grant program provides funding to state, local, tribal, and territorial governments to reduce or eliminate long-term risk from hazards. Under the program, a federal grant would cover 75% of the cost of eligible projects, with the remaining 25% covered by local or state matching funds.
