Primary Held in West Michigan State Senate Seat

This week, the special primary election was held in the 28th Senate District. The district includes a portion of Kent County and was left open after former Senator Pete MacGregor resigned after he won election as Kent County Treasurer.

The primary race winners are:

    • Democratic candidate – Keith Courtade
      • Former Kent County Commissioner.
    • Republican candidateRepresentative Mark Huizenga
      • State representative, owns a consulting firm, former city commissioner and mayor.
      • Committees – House Appropriations and House Appropriations Subcommittees on Higher Education, Community Colleges, Health and Human Services, School Aid and Department of Education, and Transportation.

The winner of the special general election in November will fill the remainder of the term, which ends on January 1, 2023. Due to the district makeup, Representative Huizenga is expected to win election to the seat later this year.
