Department Issues COVID-19 School Guidance

Aug 06, 2021

As K-12 schools in Michigan prepare for the new school year, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued updated recommendations for schools to help prevent the transmission of COVID-19. The update reflects the most current recommendations by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention on masking and prevention strategies for schools.

The key prevention strategies include:

    • Promoting vaccination for eligible staff and students.
    • Universal indoor masking regardless of vaccination status.
    • Maintaining three to six feet of physical distancing within classrooms.
    • Screening for potentially infected people.
    • Ventilation including opening doors and windows and avoiding crowding.
    • Promoting handwashing and covering coughs and sneezes.
    • Encouraging students and staff to stay home if sick or have COVID-19 symptoms.
    • Contact tracing and quarantining.
    • Cleaning once per day.

The department is also encouraging schools to take several factors into account when determining mitigation strategies, including level of community transmission, vaccination coverage in the community, and the ages of children served.
