Special State Senate Primary Elections Being Held

On Tuesday, August 3, special primary elections will be held in two Senate districts. The primary winners will go on to the special general election this November. The winner of the general election will fill partial terms, ending January 1, 2023.

The 8th Senate District was left open following the resignation of former Senator Pete Lucido after he won the election to become Macomb County prosecutor. It’s located in southeast Michigan and includes a portion of Macomb County. The candidates are:

Democratic candidates:

    • John Bill
    • Martin Genter

Republican candidates:

    • Mary Berlingieri
    • Bill Carver
    • Kristi Dean
    • Grant Golasa
    • Representative Pamela Hornberger
    • Terence Mekoski
    • Representative Doug Wozniak

The 28th Senate District is located in the western part of the state and includes a portion of Kent County. The seat became open after former Senator Pete MacGregor won election as Kent County treasurer. The candidates are:

Democratic candidates:

    • Keith Courtrade
    • Gidget Groendyk

Republican candidates:

    • Representative Tommy Brann
    • Former Representative Kevin Green
    • Representative Mark Huizenga
