Department of Civil Rights Director Leaving

May 21, 2021

After serving in the role since September 2020, Department of Civil Rights Director James White is leaving to serve as interim Detroit Police Chief, beginning on June 1. He was selected as director last August by the Civil Rights Commission, who is responsible for appointing the head of the department. The Commission will begin the search for a new director.

The Civil Rights Commission was created by the Michigan Constitution. It is charged with investigating alleged discrimination against any person because of religion, race, color or national origin, genetic information, sex, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record, and physical and mental disability. The Michigan Department of Civil Rights serves as the operational arm of the Commission.
