Secretary of State Unveils Legislative Priorities

In a proposal titled, Advancing the Vote, Protecting Democracy, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has outline legislative measures the state can take to expand voter accessibility and further strengthen election security. The plan outlines a number of initiatives the legislature could take, including:

- Requiring absentee ballot applications be mailed to registered voters every federal election cycle
- Mandate ballots postmarked by Election Day and received shortly after are counted
- Make Election Day a state holiday
- Allow overseas service members and spouses to return their ballots electronically
- Prohibit open carry of firearms within 100 feet of a voting location
- Require a statewide risk-limiting audit of election results prior to state certification

Secretary Benson is working with members of the legislature to draft and introduce legislation that embody her plan.
