House Republicans Announce COVID-19 Recovery Plan

Jan 29, 2021

This week, the House Republican caucus outlined their plan to help the state recover from the pandemic. The $3.5 billion proposal relies on both state and federal funding, which would provide aid for businesses and families, help get students back into classrooms and participate in sports and help with the state’s vaccination effort. The plan appropriates $2.1 billion for education funding but is contingent upon approval of a law moving power to close in-person learning and sports activities away from the governor’s administration to local health departments.

Specifics of their plan include:

    • $415 million grant program for restaurants and other businesses impacted by the pandemic
    • $38.5 million to reimburse liquor license and health department fees
    • Support for the unemployment benefits trust fund
    • Funding for meals for seniors, childcare and development, mental health, and substance abuse prevention and treatment
    • Rent and utility relief
    • Grant funding to help local school district provide in-person K-8 summer school and before-and-after school programs
    • Up to $250 per student to help districts reopen in-person learning by February 15
    • $22 million for vaccine distribution
    • $144 million for COVID testing
