On Thursday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) issued a “2015 Legionnaires Disease Report for Genesee County.” The report found that it can neither conclude if the increase of reported cases of legionnaires disease (LD) is related to the Flint water switch. However, it can’t rule out the possibility that the two are related. The link between the two cannot be verified due to a lack of clinical Legionella isolates from case patients, which is necessary to interpret the findings of an environmental investigation in an outbreak. While there are limited clinical isolates available, the amount is not enough to determine a conclusive environmental source. According to the report, from May 2015 through October 2015, there were forty two reported cases of LD, of those cases, four resulted in death.
An updated report for June 2014 to March 2015 was also released by the department. The report states there were forty five LD cases in Genesee County, five cases resulted in death.
