Initiatives to Increase High-Speed Internet Launched

Oct 09, 2020

At the North American International Cyber Summit this week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced $12.7 million in grant funding awarded to increase broadband internet access statewide. Currently, over 1.2 million households don’t have a permanent fixed broadband connection, which in today’s world creates several challenges. The broadband projects announced were selected through the Connecting Michigan Communities grant program. The projects will extend access to over 10,900 households, businesses, and community anchor institutions. A second round of grants will be announced later this month.

The announcement builds on the launch of the Connecting Michigan Taskforce, which Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist is helping to lead. It will advise and assist in improving coordination among stakeholders in addressing broadband and technology access and adoption issues in the state.
