Primary Election Overview: 8th House District

Through the primary election on August 4 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 8^th House District is located in Wayne County and includes a portion of the City of Detroit.

Commentary

Due to term limits, Representative Sherry Gay-Dagnogo is serving her third and final term in office. Like many other Detroit area districts, this seat has a strong 97% Democratic base. The winner of the four-way Democratic primary will almost certainly win the general election this November.

In 2016, President Trump received only 3.11% of the vote and in 2018 Governor Whitmer received 96.64% of the vote.

- Anthony Bradford
- Reggie Reg Davis – Radio personality, former Wayne County Commissioner, former deputy district manager for the Detroit Mayor.
- George Etheridge – City planner and land use and zoning specialist for the Detroit City Planning Commission.
- Stephanie Young – Executive Director of the Community Education Commission, former manager in the Mayor’s Department of Neighborhoods, former outreach manager for the Detroit Area Agency on Aging.
