Primary Election Overview: 5th House District

Jun 12, 2020

Through the primary election on August 4 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 5th House District is located in Wayne County and includes a portion of the City of Detroit.

Commentary

First term Representative Cynthia Johnson (D-Detroit) is running for a second term in office. This district has a very strong 95% Democratic base, meaning if Representative Johnson wins the primary race, she will serve another term in office. Currently, she serves on the House Agriculture Committee, the House Families, Children, and Seniors Committee, and serves as Democratic Vice Chair on the House Oversight Committee.

In 2016, President Trump received only 5.02% of the vote and in 2018 Governor Whitmer received 94.64% of the vote.
