Primary Election Overview: 3rd Michigan House District

Through the primary election on August 4 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview:

The 3^rd House District is located in Wayne County and includes a portion of the City of Detroit.

Commentary:

Representative Wendell Byrd is serving his third and final term in office due to term limits, leaving the seat open. The district has a 97% Democratic base. In 2016 President Trump received only 2.54% of the vote and in 2018 Governor Whitmer received 96.9% of the vote. The primary race is the one to watch.

- John Cromer – President and CEO of a company that counsels and coaches K-12 students

- Donavan McKinney
- Keith McMurtry – Detroit Public School teacher
- Shri Thanedar – Owned a chemical services company, 2018 gubernatorial candidate
- Art Tyus – Computer repair technician
- Al Williams – President and founder of the African American Leadership Institute
