Senate Passes Officer Training Requirements

Jun 05, 2020

On Thursday, the Senate passed SB 945, introduced by Senator Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor), that requires certain training of law enforcement officers beginning in 2022. The bill specifically requires that all incoming law enforcement officers complete training on implicit bias, de-escalation techniques, and mental health screenings as part of the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards certification requirements. There is also a requirement for annual on-going education for officers under the proposal. Earlier in the week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer voiced her support for the legislation. The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 38-0 and will be sent to the House for further consideration.
