The House approved a two-bill package allowing college athletes to receive outside compensation for their name, image, and likeness. The bipartisan package was introduced by Representative Brandt Iden (R-Oshtemo Township) and Representative Joe Tate (D-Detroit), who were both college athletes. Additionally, the bills would allow agents to enter into contracts with student-athletes, which is considered a crime in Michigan. “This is no different than a student who participates in band at a college or university performing in a separate band on the weekend, charging a cover and making a little money from their talent,” Representative Iden said. “Student-athletes should have the same opportunities – regardless of which sport they play or which college they attend.”
The legislation has been referred to the Senate Regulatory Reform Committee for consideration.
