Road Bonding Drives Forward

Jan 31, 2020

On Thursday, the State Transportation Commission authorized the sale of $3.5 billion in road and bridge building bonds. Called for by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in her State of the State address, the Commission unanimously voted to authorize the Department of Transportation to sell the bonds for 49 projects throughout the state. The vote also accelerates another 73 projects. The bonds will be issued over the next four years and repaid using revenue from the gas tax and vehicle registration fees.

State law authorizes the Commission to issue bonds for building roads. Under the law, they are required to provide the House and Senate Appropriations Committees the list of projects for which bonds are to be issued at least 30 days before they are issued. However, the legislature does not have any authority to provide authorization, or non-authorization, of the bonds.
