House Dems Urge Federal Action Protecting the Great Lakes Region

Members of the House Democratic Caucus introduced six resolutions urging the federal government to take action to protect the health, economy, and ecology of the Great Lakes region. The resolutions in the package reflect the core platforms of the Great Lakes 2020 Agenda. The provisions call for:

- Immediate action to address PFAS contamination
- Larger investment in drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure
- Greater funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative
- Stronger support for ports, harbors and critical marine infrastructure in the Great Lakes region, including the Soo Locks reconstruction project
- Better enforcement of strong ballast water rules and efforts at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam to prevent the introduction and spread of invasive species
- Improved federal assistance in reducing nutrient pollution in the western Lake Erie basin by 40% by 2025
