For the next five-years there would be a moratorium on the use of facial recognition technology under legislation introduced this week. Representative Isaac Robinson’s (D-Detroit) bill would prevent the use of facial recognition software to obtain warrants or otherwise enforce the law. The prohibition includes footage obtained from surveillance cameras, unmanned aircraft, body cameras, and street and traffic light cameras. As technology continues to evolve, the legislature will continue to have discussions on the appropriate use of technology in the everyday lives of Michigan’s residents. The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for consideration.
