House Moves Budgets Forward

Jun 14, 2019

Moving forward in the process, this week the House passed several budgets for the upcoming 2019-2020 Fiscal Year.

Aspects of the budgets include:

    • 1% increase to community colleges
    • 7% increase to universities
    • 4% increase to K-12 funding
    • Per-pupil funding increase of $90-$180
    • An additional $81.3 million in constitutional revenue sharing, meant to off-set the reduced revenue if the sales tax on gas was eliminated
    • RFP’s between $50,000-$500,000 would be required to be posted online
    • The independent redistricting commission oversight would be handled by the Legislature, instead of the Secretary of State
    • Expand the Double-Up Food Bucks program to all 83 counties
    • Funding for the expansion of school-based health clinics
    • Reimbursement for psychiatric health care providers to help children receive mental health care
    • Increased funding for rural hospitals
    • Reduced funding for the Attorney General’s office

The bills will be sent to the Senate for consideration. As the budget bills continue to move through the process, the House, Senate, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer will negotiate items of differences in order to enact a state budget prior to October 1, 2019, the beginning of the next Fiscal Year.
