Making the Most of the Detroit Chamber Policy Conference

May 22, 2019

In Michigan political circles there is no greater gathering of politicians, prominent business people, and influential leaders than the annual Detroit Chamber Policy Conference on Mackinac Island.  Every leader representing every sector will be present.  Every major donor supporting both political parties will be present.  Every major decision maker in the State will be present.  This is why developing a strategy for the island is critical.

It can be easy to get lost in a day of powerful panels, keynote speeches, and a handful of short conversations on the porch.  No matter what your business might be, coming to the island with a plan helps you make the most of your time.  I have experienced this conference as a congressional candidate, a high-level staffer, a state representative, and now a lobbyist. I would like to share my thoughts on how to get the most out of your time on the island.

First, being proactive is everything and is key to building a strategic calendar.  My planning for the conference typically begins a month out.  As a representative, I would pour through dozens of business cards and fundraising sheets to identify the individuals I wanted to be sure I met with on the island.  For every major donor I spoke with in the last couple of months I would reach out and set a 15-minute appointment on the island for a quick intro and a definite ask.  On issues I was passionate about, I would reach out to industry leaders or policy leaders to talk through strategy and ask for support on moving an issue forward.

Second, take plenty of business cards.  Mackinac Island during the conference is the last place you want to get caught without a business card. There will be ample opportunity for networking and reconnecting with acquaintances, make sure you’re prepared.

Third, be great at the follow up. To truly take advantage of your time at the conference, you must be able to extend the relationships you initiated there and transition them back home.  The follow up allows for you to reach out to your new contacts and continue the relationship.

Again, no matter what your business might be, being proactive, building a strategic calendar, networking, and being great at the follow up are all great building blocks to get the most of the Detroit Chamber Policy Conference.
