For the first time since October 2018, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Michigan last month increased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.1%. Despite this increase, the rate was two-tenths of a percentage point below the April 2018 rate of 4.3%. Last month, total employment grew by 7,000, while unemployment increased by 4,000, resulting in a new April labor force gain of 11,000. This is the eight consecutive month that workforce levels in the state have advanced.
In the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market the April 2019 unemployment rate was 4.3%, which is an increase of two-tenths of a percentage point from the prior month. Additionally, it is three-tenths of a percentage point above the April 2018 rate of 4.0%.
