This week, the House passed legislation introduced by Representative Tim Kelly (R-Saginaw Twp.) creating an A-F grading system for public schools in Michigan. The grading system would be developed by the Michigan Department of Education and will give schools grades based on benchmarks in five categories:
The first grades would be completed on September 1, 2019 and would be released to the public thereafter. Additionally, the bill creates a five-member peer review panel, with three of the members appointed by the governor and one each by the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader. The bill will be sent to the Senate for consideration.
