The Battle for Control of the Michigan House and Senate

As important as top ticket races, control of the Michigan House and Senate yields a lot of power. In order for the governor to have a successful agenda, he or she must work with both legislative chambers. This becomes infinitely easier when the House and Senate majorities, and the Governor, are all the same party, as is currently the case. However, should control split, the parties will have to find a happy medium in order to get legislation through the chambers and signed into law.

While the Democrats have their work cut out for them to flip the Michigan Senate, they will have a much easier time flipping enough seats to end the current 27-10 (one vacancy) super majority the Republican party holds. Key races to watch include:

Republicans in the House have a 63-46 majority (one vacancy) and have enjoyed being the majority since 2011. In fact, seven of the last nine Speakers have been Republicans.
