The House passed a three-bill package this week seeking to deter election fraud. Previously, the Michigan Supreme Court decided Michigan law does not clearly define election forgery as a crime. This proposal seeks to clarify law by creating clear penalties for falsely signing a petition or signing a petition with multiple names. Additionally, the bills create a new crime and definition for election forgery. Under the legislation, any person who knowingly makes, files, or publishes a false document or a document with false signatures with the intent to defraud is guilty of forgery.
The bills will be sent to the Senate for consideration.
