Primary Election Overview: 73rd House District

Through the primary election on August 7, on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 73rd House District is located in Kent County. The district includes East Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Charter Township, and the Townships of Cannon, Courtland, Nelson, Oakfield, Plainfield, and Spencer.

Commentary

Representative Chris Afendoulis (R) decided to run for the Michigan Senate instead of a third term in this House seat. The district has a strong 65% Republican base; thus, the winner of the Republican primary is all but assured to win this November. Candidates in the Republican primary race includes the current seat holder’s cousin, Lynn Afendoulis.
