Primary Election Overview: 49th House District

Through the primary election on August 7, on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 49th House District is located in Genesee County. The district includes Flint Township, Flushing, Mount Morris, Mount Morris Township, Swartz Creek, and a portion of the City of Flint.

Commentary

Due to term limits, Representative Phil Phelps (D) is serving his third and final term in this seat. The district has a 68% Democratic base, making the primary race key. The candidates include John Cherry, Jr., son of former Lt. Governor John Cherry and Representative Pam Faris.

Democratic Candidates:

  • John Cherry – Founder and owner of Flint Coffee Company
  • LaShaya Darisaw – Political organizer for Michigan United and a behavioral therapist
  • Justin Dickerson – Principal of Bentley High School in Flint, former teacher
  • Jacky King – Mt. Morris Township Board Trustee, owner and operator of the King Karate dojo
  • Dayne Walling – Owner and manager of a policy and management consulting firm, adjunct faculty at Kettering University and Baker College of Flint
  • Don Wright

Republican Candidate:

  • Patrick Duvendeck – President of PhD Automation, former engineering group manager at GM
