Primary Election Overview: 8th House District

Through the primary election on August 7, every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 8th House District is located in Wayne County and includes a portion of the City of Detroit. The district has a 97% Democratic base.

Commentary

Representative Sherry Gay-Dagnogo is running for her third, and final, term in this seat. If she wins the Democratic primary race, she will be on her way to serving her last term representing the 8th House District.

Democratic Candidates:

  • LaSonya Beaver
  • Sherry Gay-Dagnogo – State Representative, former Detroit Public School teacher, community organizer
  • George Etheridge – City Planner/Land Use and Zoning Specialist for the Detroit City Planning Commission and legislative policy analyst for the Detroit City Council, former Director of Economic Policy for the City of Detroit, former staffer for U.S. Senator Carl Levin and former Congressman John Conyers
  • Jasmine Henry – Marketing Project Consultant for Blue Care Network of Michigan, former foster care case manager
  • Seydi Sarr – Founder and Executive Director of the African Bureau for Immigration and Social Affairs, court interpreter, and filmmaker

Republican Candidate:

  • Valerie Parker – Worked for 25 years in the faith based community, former restaurant owner
