Primary Election Overview: 1st House District

Through the primary election on August 7, on every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 1^st Michigan House District is located in Wayne County and includes Grosse Pointe Woods, Harper Woods, and portions of the City of Detroit and the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores.

Commentary

This district boasts a 75% Democratic base, making the primary race key in this seat. Representative Tenisha Yancey won the special general election to fill the remaining term of former Representative Brian Banks (D), who left office prior to the end of his term. This election will be for the full two-year term, beginning January 1, 2019. In the special election primary race Representative Yancey was successful in a field of many candidates for this seat, showing she’s a strong campaigner.
