Primary Election Overview: 21st Senate District

Through the primary election on August 7, every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 21^st Senate District is located in southwest Michigan and includes the counties of Berrien, Cass, and St Joseph. The district has a 62% Republican base.

Commentary

After serving two terms, Senator John Proos (R) can’t run again due to term limits. This seat will mostly focus on the primary race as the district has a strong Republican base. However, the lone Democratic candidate has won an election in this district, making this a district to keep an eye on this November.

There are two current State Representatives in the Republican primary race vying to represent their districts in the Senate. Representative Pagel is currently serving his third term in office, while Representative LaSata is serving her first term in the legislature.

Republican Candidates:

Kim LaSata – State Representative, former teacher
Dave Pagel – State Representative, owner of Dave Pagel Farms and Produce
