Primary Election Overview: 18th Senate District

Through the primary election on August 7, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 18th Senate District is located in Washtenaw County. The district includes Ann Arbor Township, August Township, Milan, Pittsfield Township, Salem Township, Saline, Superior Township, York Township, Ypsilanti, and Ypsilanti Township. In addition to portions of Ann Arbor, Lodi Township, Saline Township, and Scio Township.

Commentary

Due to term limits, Senator Rebecca Warren (D) is serving her second and final term. The Democratic primary has several strong candidates, including State Representative Jeff Irwin. The district has a 72% Democratic base, meaning the winner of the primary race is all but assured to win in November.

Democratic Candidates:

  • Michelle Deatrick – Former policy analyst and Peace Corps Volunteer, farmer, writing teacher, poet
  • Jeff Irwin – Former State Representative, former county commissioner
  • Matthew Miller – Walmart employee
  • Anuja Rajendra – Small business owner, worked at American Power Conversion Corp. and was the Development Director for the Ann Arbor Summer Festival

Republican Candidates:

  • Martin Church – Technical support professional
