Primary Election Overview: 4th Senate District

Through the primary election on August 7, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 4th Michigan Senate District is in Southeast Michigan and includes Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Southgate, and a portion of the City of Detroit. The district has a 79% Democratic base and the winner of the Democratic primary will most certainly win the general election.

Commentary

Senator Ian Conyers is foregoing running for a second term in office to run for an open Congressional seat. Representative Fred Durhal has the advantage of name recognition, both on his own right and his father, with the same name, was a former State Representative. While as a district manager for the Mayor of Detroit, Marshall Bullock has spent time in the community, meeting and working with residents.

Democratic Candidates:

  • Marshall Bullock – District Manager for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan
  • Fred Durhal – State Representative, former literacy director for Americorps in Northwest Detroit, former member of the Teamsters Local 377
  • Carron Pinkins – Attorney, founded the non-profit “The Organization to Save our Communities, Save our Streets, and Restore Peace”

Republican Candidates:

  • Angela Savino
