Primary Election Overview: 1st Senate District

Through the primary election on August 7, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 1^st Michigan Senate District is in Wayne County in Southeast Michigan. The district includes portions of the City of Detroit and Brownstown Township, in addition to Ecorse, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile Township, River Rouge, Riverview, Trenton, Woodhaven, and Wyandotte. The district has a 75% Democratic base, most likely the winner of the Democratic primary will win in November.

Commentary

Senator Coleman Young is term limited from running again for this seat, leaving it open. Half of the candidates in the Democratic primary race are current and former legislators.

Nicholas Rivera – Admissions counselor at Wayne State University, serves in the Michigan Army National Guard
