Through the primary election on August 7, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 9^th Congressional district is in Southeast Michigan and includes the counties of Oakland and Macomb. The seat has a 55% Democratic base.

Commentary

This year, Congressman Sandy Levin announced his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives, where he has served since 1983. His son, Andy Levin, along with two other candidates are running in the Democratic primary this August.

Democratic Candidates:

Martin Brook – Former Bloomfield Hills School Board member, attorney
Andy Levin – Small business owner providing financing for clean energy solutions, attorney
Ellen Lipton – Former state Representative, patent attorney, founder and president of the Michigan Promise Zone Association.

Republican Candidates:

Candius Stearns – Owns a business providing commercial property, casualty, and 401k securities
