Primary Election Overview: 7th U.S. House District

Through the primary election on August 7, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 7^th U.S. House District includes Branch County, Eaton County, Hillsdale County, Jackson County, Lenawee County, Monroe County, and Washtenaw County.

Commentary

This year, Congressman Tim Walberg will once again seek to represent the 7^th district. He was first elected to this seat in 2006, however in 2008 he lost the seat to former Democratic Congressman Mark Schauer. In 2010 he won his old seat back and has since won each election to continue to serve in Congress. As he doesn’t have a primary challenger this year, all eyes will be on the Democratic primary race in August.

Democratic Candidates:

Gretchen Driskell – Former accountant, real estate agent, former Mayor of Saline and state Representative.
Steven Friday – Former social worker and community organizer and an Air Force Veteran

Republican Candidates:

Congressman Tim Walberg – Congressman, former union steel mill worker, pastor and state Representative
