Primary Election Overview: 3rd U.S. House District

Through the primary election on August 7, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 3^rd U.S. House District is in West Michigan. It includes Barry County, Calhoun County, Ionia County, Kent County, and Montcalm County.

Commentary

Incumbent Congressman Justin Amash is seeking his fifth term in office. A self-described libertarian Republican, he didn’t miss a vote during the first six years he was in office. Should he win the primary race, he will likely win the general election in November.

Democratic Candidates:

Cathy Albro – Teacher, small business owner, small-scale fruit farmer
Fred Wooden – Reverend, former members of the West Michigan ACLU Advisory Board, the Grand Rapids Urban League Board, among others.

Republican Candidates:
