Candidates File for August Primary

Apr 27, 2018

This past Tuesday was the filing deadline for most candidates wishing to be on the August 7th primary ballot. “While this may be a midterm election year, it is shaping up to be a big one for the State of Michigan as all statewide offices and all seats in the Michigan Legislature are up for election,” explained Matt Sowash of MLC. Additionally, due to term limits there are many seats that won’t have an incumbent on the ballot. Furthermore, there are a number of incumbents who are facing primary challenges this year in the House, Senate, and Congress.

The spots up for election on the August primary ballot this year are:

  • Governor
  • One United States Senate seat
  • All 14 Congressional seats
  • All 38 Michigan Senate seats
  • All 110 Michigan House of Representative seats
  • Judgeships on the District, Circuit, and Appeals Courts

Additionally, due to the public official leaving prior to the end of his or her term, there are a few primary races for partial terms, including:

  • 13th U.S. House District
  • 2nd State Senate District
  • 68th State House District
  • And a number of Judgeships

To view the candidate listing for each race on the Secretary of State’s website, please click here. Candidates have until 4 p.m. on Friday, April 27 to withdraw from the race. Beginning in May and running until the August primary, check the MLC blog for overviews of the races and candidates that are making the headlines this year.

The primary candidates for Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, and the Michigan Supreme Court will be selected by their parties at their annual conventions in August.
