The Senate Appropriations Committee also approved a supplemental appropriation providing $18.6 million for school safety initiatives. The funds would allow schools to compete for grants to buy technology and equipment or conduct school assessments to enhance security. Additionally, they could use the funds to purchase security equipment, public address systems, shatterproof glass and an application which allows teachers and school professionals to alert 911 and on-site staff to an emergency by pressing only one button. The supplemental bill was passed 35-0 by the Senate on Thursday and has been sent to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration.
